Executive Chairman
Mark Willcocks

In 1974 Mark started a small business, which has since grown into Active Tree Services, an industry leading organisation with hundreds of employees and contractors working in all Australian states. For most of this time, Mark has been the managing director.

Since the appointment of a professional CEO in 2002, Mark has continued his "hands on" involvement by working closely with the leadership team of the business and contributing to operational and strategic activities on a daily basis.

At an industry level, Active Tree Services and Mark have been instrumental in bringing together tree contracting organisations through leadership of industry bodies and sponsorship of Arboriculture Australia and Utility Arborist Association of Australia.

Mark has played a key role over several years in the development of an industry code of practice and other standards for the industry that has raised the professionalism and safety levels of operators across the board.

In 2012 Mark was selected by Australian Arbor Age as the first Living Legend of the Australian tree industry. In 2004 Mark was awarded the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the year for the services industry in NSW. In 2011 he invented the Bushi, a remote controlled boom saw.

His passion for the business and the industry is unabated, and Mark enjoys nothing more than travelling around the company’s field operations, talking to employees and subcontractors and listening to their suggestions for improving the business.

Mark holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Sydney University.

Management Team

Chief Executive Officer
John Tolmie

John joined Active Tree Services in June 2013, following CEO appointments in private business specialising in equipment hire, manufacturing and retailing over the previous 11 years.  His background also includes Supply Chain Director roles in large multi-national companies. John's career started with 22 years of service in the Army, including senior positions in logistics, HR and training in various states of Australia, as well as assignments in USA and UK.  He was awarded a Conspicuous Service Cross in the Australia Day Honours List, 1995.

He brings a background in strengthening organisations and providing clarity of company direction to the wider business.  Therefore the focus for John is to build the skills and capability of the people in the business and to ensure that the operational processes are optimised.  The development of strong partnerships providing great value to our customers will be a priority for him. 

John and the team at Active Tree Services will continually strive to provide services that others find hard to match by using the latest technology, equipment and methods whilst continually investing in developing the capability of our workforce.

He has a degree in Social Sciences (HRD) and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Chief Operating Officer - SA, WA, VIC,NT & TAS
Jim Roberts

Jim joined Active Tree Services in January 2002 to build the South Australian operation. Prior to joining Active Tree Services Jim owned and operated a private SA based Tree Surgery Company.

Over the past 12 years Jim has built the SA Operation from a humble start to now employing over a 200 staff, this has been achieved through building solid customer relationships and continuing to deliver best value to clients. Jim is past Chairman of the South Australian Society Of Arboriculture and was part of the committee that brought the first International Society of Arboriculture conference to Adelaide.

Jim holds a Diploma of Business, Diploma of Agriculture and Diploma of Arboriculture.

Group General Manager - NSW
David Lancaster

David was appointed in 2004 to drive the development of Active Tree Services’ financial and business systems infrastructure and assure its financial strength through a period of significant growth.

Prior to joining Active, David started his career in chartered accounting before moving into large multinational organisations operating in the logistics and banking industries. David has vast experience in financial management and governance as well as business processes and systems. David has led the role out of global logistics systems in the US and Asia.

David’s focus is on implementing and maintaining a strong, flexible and effective business systems and financial infrastructure, providing tools and information to help guide the business forward.

David is a CPA and holds a Bachelor of Economics degree from Macquarie University.

  Group Human Resources Manager
Tom Hearne

Tom has worked as HR Manager and HR Executive for almost 30-years. His experience includes working as the Head of HR with three ASX listed companies as well as  a number of privately owned companies he also spent two years in private equity which included working in China. Tom’s industry experience includes Transport & Logistics, Property Development, Retail and FMCG. Tom is an honours graduate in Organisation Studies and also holds several other tertiary qualifications including qualifications in Teaching (TESOL) and Adult learning. A passionate believer in lifelong learning Tom completed online course with Harvard University, University of Queensland and recently commenced a Leadership Ethics online course with Boston University.

Fleet Services Manager
Andrew Baxter

Andrew has over sixteen years’ experience in the vegetation industry, joining Active Tree Services in 2006 to project manage the company's large utility and government contracts in Queensland. He progressed to Operations Manager in 2008 and earned his appointment to General Manager of both Queensland and Northern Territory in 2012.

Andrew has proven to be an integral part of the Active Tree services management team with mentoring positions in NSW and WA while also driving change for all staff training on a national scale over the past 2 year. Combining these skills with his 10 years’ experience as a trade qualified Diesel mechanical, Andrew has seamlessly transitioned into the National Fleet Manager’s position during 2015.

Andrew holds the formal qualifications: Diploma Arboriculture, Cert IV Business Management, Cert IV Training and Workplace Assessment, Trade Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Diesel Fuel Injection).


Special Projects
Andy Marinkovic

Andy was appointed in January 1996 to manage the expansion of Active Tree Services into Victoria.
Prior to joining Active, Andy had a successful career with the Victorian Electricity Commission where he managed major business units leading teams of technical, commercial and trades employees.
His knowledge of power supply and associated services has been very valuable in establishing and maintaining relationships with our key power industry customers in Victoria and other states.
Over the past decade, Andy has been instrumental in further successful expansion of the Active brand into South Australia, and Western Australia. 
Andy holds a Diploma of Electrical Engineering, Electrical Trades qualifications and a Diploma in Arboriculture.
